The Importance of Setting Goals
In the big vast beautiful world that is modeling, it’s easy to feel lost sometimes. In an industry where the competition is fierce, and the variety is abundant, it can sometimes feel as though you’re getting forgotten, or left behind. Feeling stuck and stagnant, is something you never want to feel in life, and definitely not in the modeling world. So, that is why I am here to tell you the importance of setting goals, to help further your career as a model.
You learn so many applicable life lessons while modeling. One of the best things I’ve learned thus far, is how extremely important it is to set goals for yourself and to stay motivated until you achieve them. Without something to strive for, or even look forward to, the industry can feel a bit chaotic and unpredictable. That being said, one of my favorite things about the industry is that it’s constantly changing. Majority of the time, you will never have one shoot, or job like the last. Each one will be different. It will consist of interacting with different people on set, wearing different clothes, evoking different moods and emotions, doing different poses, being in a different location, and the list goes on and on.
Modeling is a career that allows for constant change, growth, and evolution. I don’t know about you, but that sounds a whole lot better than the average 9-5 ho hum that so many people have to deal with on a daily basis.
Being a model allows you to control your own destiny, or even manifest your own destiny in a sense. I am a firm believer in the law of attraction. Think it, dream it, and you will have it if you work hard enough. Decide what it is that you want to achieve, and work every day until it’s tangible; no matter how big or small your goal may be.
I’ve had so many instances, where after a shoot, or a big job, I have to step back and ask myself: “where do I go from here?” “How do I become a better model, and land an even bigger and better job than this?” It can be intimidating at times, but working towards something feels a lot more productive than not having anything you’re specifically striving for.
I remember my first big modeling achievement was booking an eight page editorial spread in a magazine. After, I told myself that the next thing I wanted to achieve, was getting on the cover of a magazine, and I did it! After getting the cover, I remember feeling like I didn’t know where to go from there. I felt like I had accomplished all of the goals, and I had shot with all of the photographers I had wanted to, and worked with all of the brands that I had dreamed about working with in Hawaii, so I decided my next goal, was to expand my market to LA.
For the longest time, I wanted to get signed to an agency in LA. It took lots of rejection, and lots of hard work, but after a year and a half, I finally landed an agency in LA who accepted me for who I was. A little time had passed, and I was still working pretty consistently, but I started to feel lost again, like I was going nowhere in modeling. Then, I got asked to walk in New York fashion week; a dream that I think every model can say is on her list. Now, I can say that I’ve checked that one off my list! It was an experience of a lifetime, one that I hope to relive over and over again during future fashion weeks.
So, with the new year approaching, I’ve decided to set some new goals for myself. First and foremost, I want to walk during Miami Swim week this summer. I plan on training hard every single day to get into the best shape of my life, researching the brands that I’d love to work with, and then attending the castings in hopes of getting to strut my stuff down the runway during swim week. My bigger goal that I’ve set for future years to come, is eventually getting to work with Sports Illustrated, and getting selected as one of the Rookies of the year.
In conclusion, I’m now going to pose you with a question. What are your goals? How and when do you plan on achieving these goals? Don’t wait for the new year to make your resolutions. Start now, and become the best model that you can be!
Go get um babes!
